Law Enforcement Officials Investigate Instance Of Forgery

Law enforcement officials were asked to initiate an investigation during the weekend after a Summertown woman discovered someone had stolen and forged some of her checks.

The victim, age 72, reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Saturday that she and several relatives had been decorating for a wedding when the crime occurred.

The victim said that when they took a break she went to her car and found that someone had tampered with her purse. She said that she noticed that her purse had been opened and that her checkbook was facing the wrong direction. Further investigation revealed that several checks were missing.

A relative called businesses in the area to see whether anyone had attempted to pass the checks. Officials at Three Oaks Market reported that they had accepted one.

Store officials said that a man had used a check to pay for $15 worth of gas and $15 worth of cigarettes. The check was written for $140, with the culprit pocketing the remaining $110.

As a result of the investigation warrants were issued against thirty-one year old Brian Lance Dial of 202 Captain Drive, Ethridge, charging him with the crimes of theft of property and forgery.
